The History of Nokia

Nokia's history started with the wood pulp mill established by Fredrik Idestam in 1865. The turn of the century also saw the birth of two other companies, the Finnish Rubber Works and Suomen Punomotehdas Oy, a wire and cable manufacturer. Nokia Ab also started generating electricity during the early years.

In the early 1900s, the companies grew in spite of external threats. In addition to the traditional forestry industry, the other industries also achieved a good position on the Finnish market.

The period between and immediately after the two World Wars was dedicated to developing the businesses. New products were developed in all industries. The use of modern production methods meant that the products provided a feasible Finnish alternative for other industries.

The changes in world economy led to the company's different businesses having to concentrate on domestic markets. This would later be reversed as the company started shifting its focus onto international markets.

After the 1966 merger, Nokia increased its international focus on every one of its business areas: the rubber, cable and forestry industries, electricity generation and electronics. Nokia expanded through corporate acquisitions and became the European market leader in several fields, such as rubber industry and TV set manufacture.

As Nokia was approaching the 90s, it strived to radically cut down the number of different businesses. The task proved to be challenging.

In 1994, CEO Jorma Ollila formulated the key elements of Nokia's strategy: leave old businesses and increasingly focus on telecommunications.

The change of course taken by Nokia was of paramount importance in many ways. The implementation of the new strategy helped the company's finances reach a sound standing, created the basis for a successful conquer of the world markets and rooted more efficient operational methods in the company.
